Beach

(photographs, 2000-2007)

“Beach” focuses on the public space by the sea, commonly associated to pleasure and to escaping from the everyday life. The shores are portrayed in a decelerating fashion, with the purpose of transporting the viewer to the time of the image, bringing up awareness of the act of looking, as well as the richness of the subject.

Here, neither the people nor the landscape shall be reduced or categorized to the condition of an illustrative figure. On the contrary, all elements are pictured in their full condition, emphasizing both its uniqueness and unpredictability.

The series are inspired by the romantic landscape painting, using its color palette and horizontal format. The images emanate lyricism, but also indicates a subtle tension between the aura of peace and pleasure and the alienation of potential conflicts, present in the nowadays society.

The photographs were taken with film, depicting Porto da Barra, a urban beach in the heart of Salvador da Bahia, in Brazil, eventually including images of another location.
